June recipes: food meets craft

I’ve been doing (at least) one new-to-me craft or other creative, novel thing a month for the last 2 years. One month, I took a dance class. Another month, I brushed my teeth with my non-dominant hand. During another, I tried (with varying success) to get back into poetry.

Some of my summer craft goals include working with ferments in crafts in new ways (like making microbe shirts), playing with cyanotypes, and getting back into sword fighting again. Had I the supplies to hand, I’d like to get into agar art. Some day!

I’ll also be on book tour, so I’ve got ample time to add goodies to my adventure ferment as well.

In the kitchen, I’ve been experimenting too. This Beltane I adapted a version of Gather Victoria’s honey summer solstice cookies using edible flowers from my garden and Irish honey, and also fermented an accompanying mead using the same ingredients.

Read on for the recipes from some other foods I’ve been playing with, including:

  • a (literal) magical soup made with friends, for when you want to deeply connect to your creativity
  • a lemon/honey/soy steak marinade for those rare moments when I make a steak
  • Caesar-ish dressing using pantry staples for when I’m low on motivation
  • My daily driver high protein dinner recently: A roasted chickpea, veg, and halloumi salad with pita. All tossed on one pan, it’s super low effort but very delicious.
